A comprehensive proposal for youth basketball programming that addresses the needs of youth athletes in Sacramento, California. This work consists of two parts: The first component is an after-school recreational basketball program providing academic support to students and social services to families. The second is a competitive youth basketball league integrating social and emotional learning and mentorship into its structure.
The aim of this two projects is to reimagine the use of gym space and create an atmosphere of mindfulness and intentionality in athletic programming that extends beyond the walls of the gym to foster solidarity and systemic support in the Sacramento Area. It includes a detailed description of the programs, along with a timeline, diagrams explaining the intervention into gym space, and a budget for implementation and scaling.
MARCUS FORBES
Marcus Forbes is a 23 year old Ed.M. student in the specialized studies program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education studying community-based education and the impact of critical pedagogy in informal learning spaces. As a former collegiate basketball player, basketball camp director, and competitive youth coach, he has particular interest in extracurricular sports-based learning, and community empowerment through athletic involvement. His other areas of interests include critical race theory, social entrepreneurship, and ed tech initiatives.
